| We are deeply
sorry to report that Hutch Hutchinson, our gentle and gracious long
time Board member, recently passed away. Hutch was a driving force
behind the acquisition, refurbishment and upkeep of the Hilton Head
Hero House. We celebrate his extraordinary life and take some small
comfort in knowing that all of the brave young children who have
passed through the Hero House doors on their way to Heaven, can
now rest their little heads on the warm safe teddy bear shoulders
of someone who served them wholeheartedly in such a kind, generous
and loving way. When asked how he was doing, with a twinkle in his
eye, Hutch would always answer, "better than I deserve".
We will greatly miss our Hero, Hutch, a better friend than most
of us could ever deserve.

Before I retired,
there was no time for much charity involvement, but I had
talked with Hutch over the years about his work with HHHeroes
and became interested in serving in some capacity. He didnt
forget, and as soon as I had more time, he encouraged me
to come on the Board of Directors. That was almost two years
ago, and Im happy to say, he was right. It is a perfect
fit.
Like Hutch, I prefer to work in the background rather than
dealing with the families directly. He was so soft-hearted
that he easily broke up just talking about the children
and their illnesses, not to mention those times when he
had direct contact. Gregg shared at the funeral a story
that relates this so clearly. It illustrates Hutchs
compassion for, and empathy (not just sympathy) with, others
who are hurting.

In 1992, Hutch and Elagene decided to play cupid and get Don and
I hooked up. Just prior to that, I had lost my father to cancer
and went on a cruise to Bermuda with 75 of my closest fiends.
Elagene was my cabin mate and she and I got to dance with Hutch
every evening. Hutch was asked to leave the dining room one evening
when he dressed as a Ship Mate, as they mistakenly assumed his
crisp white shorts were underwear
After our arrival on shore,
Hutch and Elagene planned events to invite Don and I and eventually,
Cupids arrow went to our hearts. We were married on The
Mistique, Harbour Towns Yacht Club boat on Calibogue Sound.
Hutch was our Best Man and Elagene was our Matron of Honor. Hutchs
ashes were sprinkled in Calibogue Sound after his Memorial Service.
As we docked next to the
Liberty Oak, Gregg Russell was gathering his flock. Ascending
the dock, as the crowd realized we were a wedding party, cheers
and clapping brought tears to our eyes. And, what Hutch contributed
to Hilton Head Heroes through the efforts of Gregg and Lindy Russell
is amazing.
At our tribute to Hutch,
Friday, Feb 14, 2009, Gregg sang Hutchs fave song, Come
Away Home. Its mine, too.
As Gregg said, Hutch is
Home.

As I had said to Hutch
at our November board meeting "I have only lived here three
and one half years, however in that relatively short period of
time it is rare to encounter an individual that when you mention
his name people immediately brighten and say wonderful things
about him." That was Hutch. What a privilege it was for me
to have gotten to know him.a

I adored Hutchie;
he was my "Buddy". I think it was a "mutual
admiration society"!
I loved seeing him every Wednesday morning at our Sea Pines
meetings. He'd be there bright and early, reading his newspaper.
That wonderful kind face would light up with a big smile
to greet me, a little peck on the cheek and a hug to start
our day. No matter what his trials and tribulations had
been that week, he was always upbeat, never complained and
just happy to be where he was with friends.
Now to my favorite
a couple years ago, I had tickets
to go to the annual Chamber Ball. Learning that my partner,
Bob, had to be out of town and couldn't attend; I called
Hutch to see if he was already spoken for or would he like
to go and sit together at the Ball? Fortunately, he had
not yet gotten a date and said he'd love to be my escort!
A few days before the Saturday night event, Bob and I ran
into Hutch at the Beach Club where he was standing "court"
with several of the regulars who just loved being around
him. As we were standing alone with Hutch enjoying a beverage
and the ocean breezes, my Bobby said,
"Hutch,
I'm happy that you and Barbie will be going to the Chamber
Ball together this Saturday night but just remember
you
can't touch anything"! Without skipping a beat and
relishing what Bob had just announced
with a twinkle
in his eye and that sweet, impish face, Hutch leaned forward
a bit and said
"define anything"!!
Needless to say, we went, had a wonderful time and laughed
all night about our "anything's"!!
Lovingly submitted,
"Barbie" (as Hutch always called me) Finer
